If you watched this summer’s Olympic Games, went on any form of social media or pretty much looked at a TV screen, I’m sure you already know who Simone Biles is. At 19 years old, Biles took home five medals from the 2016 Olympic Games, including four gold and one bronze. Most notable is her gold for women’s individual all around.
However, her impressive dominance in the sport did not start at this year’s Olympic Games. Biles’ is the only woman to win the all-around world championship three years in a row and has 14 total world championship medals.
Born in Ohio, Biles and her sister Adria moved to Texas to live with their grandparents. The girls’ biological mother struggled with substance abuse problems and was unable to care for them herself. Eventually, their grandparents adopted them both.
Biles discovered gymnastics while on a field trip with her day care center to the local gym. While there, she began to imitate their tricks. From there, she was asked to join the gym’s classes and has been participating in gymnastics ever since.
With her great success have come partnership and endorsement deals with big names such as Tide, Hershey’s, Nike and more. Biles has racked up an estimated two billion dollars between deals and prize money from events.
What’s next for Biles? Audiences can now read her life story in her own words come November 15 with the release of her autobiography titled Courage to Soar.
According to an article from Fox News, “The book will reveal ‘how challenges in her childhood have shaped her into the young woman and role model she is today. She shares the ups and downs of her life, insights into her positive mental approach, and her inspiring journey to the pinnacle of her sport.’”
Being the most decorated American female gymnast of all times at only 19 years old, it’s incredible to see her success. Biles is currently taking some time off from the sport as she decides whether or not compete again in the 2020 Tokyo games.
