Every September college students in Worcester can count on a few things: a return to campus life, a new academic year, and the Shrewsbury Shuffle. Shrewsbury Street is home to many of Worcester’s finest food and beverage destinations, featuring a diverse line up of cuisine and tastes for all eaters. No matter what you are craving, Shrewsbury Street has something for you and it was displayed perfectly yet again in the 10-year anniversary of the shuffle.
Personally, this was my first ever shuffle and having only visited Shrewsbury Street a few times in my two years here at Assumption, I really wasn’t too sure what to expect. However, I soon realized that this event is one of which all college students in Worcester should take advantage. Upon arrival at the north end of the street, I was feeling fully immersed in the Shuffle and ready to follow my fellow patrons to any and all participating locations.
The first stop for my group of shufflers was Vintage Grille. Vintage Grille is known for their signature mac and cheese and they absolutely delivered with my first dish of the day of buffalo chicken mac and cheese. Right down the street we reached our next destination, Flying Rhino. Flying Rhino was one of the few restaurants I had previously attended and it continued to impress me with a generous serving of their Ivory Tusk sandwich, with chicken, caramelized onions, mayonnaise and a few fried pickles. Shuffling right along, we then encountered the vendor section of the street. A variety of vendors were offering anything from soft-drink samples to intricate custom glassware. It offered a nice balance and change of content and pace to the rest of the event, allowing participants to leisurely shop before racing to the next eatery.
Our next few stops occurred in rather rapid succession, including Brew City with chili, Volturno with honestly one of the best slices of pizza I have ever had, sweet with savory truffles and Miranda Bread with a selection of breads and juices. At this point in the shuffle I was becoming quite full and noticing that the event was nearing a close. However, in our final trek back to the bus stop returning to campus, we made possibly my favorite stop of the day at the Boulevard Diner. This historic Worcester location was serving nearly full breakfasts of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, home fries and toast. As a breakfast enthusiast I was blown away by both the taste and generosity and will certainly be making a return to this institution.
Unfortunately, after this stop at the diner, my stomach had been brought to a new level of full and my shuffle had ended. Overall, I recommend all Assumption students and college students in Worcester to attend this event before you graduate. The Shrewsbury Street Shuffle had everything I was looking for and most students felt the same way, “I have definitely made some new favorites that I’ll check out this year,” said senior and first time shuffler, Marissa Smith. It is truly rare that you will find such an inclusive and fun, taste filled event all for the love of food. I for one cannot wait to shuffle again next year.
