Saturday, September 10, Campus Activities Board sponsored a new on-campus event for all students. The Roller Rink was held at the Plourde Gymnasium from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The idea for the roller rink was a new and inventive idea brought up by event coordinator, Maia Campbell.
“The roller rink is something I really want to do,” Maia, a sophomore, told me she said back in April when CAB was brainstorming ideas for new on-campus events. She wanted a new and exciting way to welcome students of interest to CAB events starting this semester.
Maia and her team worked hard to set up the event. The gym was blacked out. A candy bar and raffle were provided. A makeshift roller rink was set up in the middle of the gym accompanied by flashing disco lights. Thanks to Neon Entertainment, the roller rink had an amazing flair and ambiance.
CAB advertised the event for two weeks. They placed small ads throughout the dorms on campus and provided a larger ad in Charlie’s. Maia’s goal was to attract as many students as possible, and heard positive feedback about the event’s attendance. As the night went on, students came and went at a steady pace to enjoy the event with very much to hardly any skating experience.
Kelsey Mattar, a sophomore, was working the front desk at Plourde that night and tried her hand at skating. Kelsey’s interest in skating and the free candy bar drew her to the event. As a member of CAB, Kelsey knew about the Roller Rink in advance but was reminded about it with occasional posts on Instagram.
Marissa Smith, a senior, who is also a part of CAB, heard about the event in a similar fashion. When asked if she enjoys coming to CAB-sponsored events, Marissa stated, “I actually do, even if I wasn’t a part of CAB, I would come anyway.” It seems as though CAB does a good job keeping its members and other students happy with its on-campus events.
I was interested to know about upcoming CAB events during the semester. Marissa and Maia kindly filled me in on a few. The dodge ball tournament, which will also be held in Plourde, will be on Saturday, September 17. Prizes will be awarded to teams and fans for spirit and involvement. During that same day, CAB is offering a shuttle to Wrentham Outlets in Wrentham, Mass. Sign-ups for the shuttle are open now. Also in the next month, CAB will be hosting Family Weekend starting Friday, September 30.
