Poetry is an art form that has made history for centuries around the world. This art allows human language to be expressed in various different ways. Poetry is special because the creator has a complete freedom to express him or herself however he or she wants to, with no restrictions on what the creator is able to do. This is where human imagination takes over and can lead to greatness.

Last year The African-Latino/Hispanic-Asian-and Native American Network hosted its first Poetry Slam event. It was a successful event and a total blast. There were around 12 students that had the courage to step up and perform, and they all did amazing. It was a great chance for people to get their voices heard, and now the Assumption community has another chance at this. On Thursday, December 3, the ALANA Network will be hosting the second annual Poetry Slam event. The event will be held in Charlie’s and will run from 7 until 9 p.m. Through-out the event, there will be guest performances by professional poets. The theme for this event is “Overcoming an Obstacle,” and there is a cash prize for the top three winners of this event.

“Overcoming an Obstacle” is a topic to which everyone can relate. Nothing in this world is easy and some of us fight extremely hard in order to accomplish the goals that we set. Personally, I am thankful for all of the struggles and obstacles that I have been challenged with, even though at the time it feels like they are tearing you apart. I believe that all of the adversity that I have faced in the past has shaped me to become the man I am today. The challenge of growing up without a father has been the biggest obstacle of my life. This hurdle has taught me the greatest lesson that I have ever learned. It has taught me to never give up, and if life knocks you down, one must get up, brush the dirt off of your shoulders and continue to chase your dreams with the same intensity that Usain Bolt runs on that track. When the going gets tough and situations tend to get unfair, greatness is created from those who can take advantage of their obstacles the same way that they take advantage of their opportunities.

If you have some free time on the night of the event, even if you do not necessarily think that you would like to perform, feel free to stop by and hear other people’s stories while enjoying some beverages and desserts. This is a different type of event than what other clubs do: this event gives you an opportunity to voice your thoughts and feelings to your fellow classmates and peers. If you are interested in signing up for the Poetry Slam, then you can stop by the Cross Cultural Center and sign up, or you can email Stephanie DeSouza. Stephanie.desouza@assumption.edu
