Please stop obsessing over celebrities' lives
Why should I care if some professional basketball player is married to a rich girl who is on a reality TV show? Why does that make him famous? These are the questions I always ask when people talk about Lamar Odom.
Unless you are an avid basketball fan, you probably first learned about Lamar Odom when he dated and then married Khloe Kardashian. While Odom was a successful basketball player with many NBA teams including the Clippers and the Heat, he became a household name because of his relationship with Khloe and his subsequent appearances on Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami and Khloe and Lamar.
I have to admit, I am not a Kardashian fan. I know very little about the family and until doing research for this article, I had no idea Odom was in a relationship with a Kardashian. To me, the Kardashians are a group of rich people who do somewhat interesting things. But I don’t really care what they do with their lives.
I knew Odom’s name because I know a little about the NBA. To me, his only claim to celebrity status is his basketball career. But millions of people only know about him because of his relationship with a Kardashian. And the question I always ask is what do the Kardashians do that makes them so popular? Why do people care what a rich family does with their life? And how are they so important that marrying one of them can make a person into a celebrity?
The Kardashians have a large fan base and they arguably have more people interested in their life than any other family in the world. What do they do to deserve this? In my opinion, the escapades of spoiled rich women have no morally valuable quality and very little interest. And I really don’t care who they marry.
But many Americans, especially teenagers and people in their early twenties, do care.
I don’t know why people care about Odom and the Kardashians. I assume it’s because they think that watching people live “successful” lives is a worthwhile pursuit. To me, the lives Odom and the Kardashians lead are not really successful and the modern obsession with them seems unhealthy.
Odom had a semi-successful career in basketball. But his life has been checkered by arrests for drug use and for his dealings with prostitutes. The Kardashians don’t seem to have done anything to make them famous. They just are famous and there isn’t a real reason behind it. And now everyone wants to know whom he or she dates and how the relationship is going.
Why are celebrity relationships the focus of the media? Newspapers and magazines print what sells and for some reason, celebrity gossip sells very well. But I honestly don’t see why Americans are so concerned with celebrities’ lives.
So, someone you have never met has a lot of money and always makes a big fuss about who they date, marry and so on. How does that affect your life? You will never meet Odom or the Kardashians. You are not friends with them. Don’t concern yourself with their lives. So they have had some success. Good for them. Go out and find success for yourself instead of living vicariously through others.
