On Saturday, September 12, the Assumption College Greyhound football team took on the Long Island University Post Pioneers on the road in their second game of the regular season. The Hounds were coming off a big win in the season opener, where they had a nail-biting come back with a 41-37 victory over Kutztown, Pennsylvania. In the first start of his career, sophomore quarterback Brendan Tobey threw for an astonishing 323 passing yards, earning him Assumption College Player of the Week recognition.

This week Assumption traveled to LIU Post, where the Pioneers are the defending Northeast-10 champions, creating a challenging game for the Hounds. In the first quarter, both teams had rocky starts, combining for five turnovers. At the end of the first quarter, the score remained in LIU Post’s favor, 10-3.

After rallying back from a deficit, Assumption gained momentum by scoring 13 straight points to take a 16-13 lead beginning with a 30-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Cole Tracy.

“Never give up. We always stay in the game until that whistle blows,” said junior captain Jarrod Casey.

Tracy had an amazing first half by booting a school-record 52-yard field goal with 52 seconds left. But things took a slight turn as LIU Post threw a 40-yard touchdown pass with only 19 seconds left on the clock.

Tracy kept his great game going as he kicked the next three scoring possessions for Assumption, a 21-yarder, a 28-yarder and a 35-yarder. The Pioneers answered back with a fourth down 10-yard scramble by quarterback Jeff Kidd to make the score 25-20 with 7:15 left in the fourth quarter.

After a quick turnover by the Hounds, they stood their ground with lockdown defense and got the ball back with only three minutes remaining. LIU Post forced a turnover, and with a four-yard rush by junior Mike Williams, made the score 33-25 LIU.

With a never say die attitude, Assumption showed some last minute heroics from first year Deonte Harris, who snagged a 36-yard touch down pass with 36 seconds remaining in the game. The Hounds were down by just two points and attempted the two-point conversion to tie the game, but came up just a yard short.

The ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Hounds, but called back due to a penalty. With a re-kick, Assumption once again recovered the ball. With 32 seconds left the Hounds gave it their all, but quarterback Marc Monks was intercepted and returned for 43 yards and a touchdown. The official score was 40-31 LIU Post, a tough conference loss for the Hounds.

“We are going to put last game in the past, take it game by game, day by day, and play by play,” said Casey, who leads the team in tackles. “We have a good team. We have to keep our heads up and focus on next week.”

There were other notable performances, like one from junior running back Alex Shain, who had his second straight game of over 100 yards and totaled three touchdowns on the season. Sophomore kicker Cole Tracy had a very impressive outing by hitting all six of his field goal attempts, which really kept the Hounds in the game, and earned him NE-10 Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

“I credit the whole field goal team. They provided great protection for me so I just had to focus on my job,” said Tracy.

Moving forward, Assumption takes on Pace on Saturday, September 26 on Family Weekend.
