On Friday, March 6, the Assumption College Department of Athletics released a statement that Coach Matt Mahar has left the Institution. Mahar had been at Assumption for four seasons.

“We would like to thank Coach Mahar for his service to the student-athletes, Athletic Department, and institution as a whole. He has decided to pursue other opportunities and we wish him the best,” said Director of Athletics and Recreation,Nick Smith, in an e-mail.

This announcement came after eight straight losses rounded out the season, and they finished 8-18 overall and 5-16 in the Northeast-10. Though the Hounds opened the season strong during an exhibition game against the University of Connecticut Huskies, they ended the season in last place amongst other Northeast-10 schools.

Upon request, student athletes weren’t available for comments.

Since Smith assumed the role of Director of Athletics in 2012 the 23 athletic teams have seen vast improvement both athletically and academically.

“My expectations for the Men’s Basketball team are the same for our other 22 intercollegiate programs for achievement of excellence in academics, athletics, and the community,” said Smith.

After being ranked 16 out of 16 in the Northeast-10 President’s Cup ranking in 2011-2012, Assumption is now ranked third.

“This is tribute of the hard work that our student-athletes, coaches, and staff have put in and I thank them for that,” said Smith.
