Losing streak continues for Hounds
The Assumption College men’s basketball team lost to Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, February. 7, to Stonehill College on Wednesday, February. 11 and to Merrimack College on Saturday, February 14. Their record is now 8-15 on the season and 5-13 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
Franklin Pierce 67 Assumption 64
Assumption sophomore Jack Sullivan’s buzzer shot with time expiring came up just short in Franklin Pierce’s 67-64 win. After Assumption junior Junior Julian Aiken made a three with an assist from senior Jimmy Zenevitch to bring Assumption College back to within three, 67-64.
Prior to Assumption’s comeback, Franklin Pierce held a 12-point lead, 57-45, with five minutes left in the game. They started the second half with an 11-0 run, leading 36-26. Aiken cut the lead to 38-33 with a layup, but Franklin Pierce would extend their lead to eight with a three from Vilmont following Aiken’s layup.
Assumption led by a score of 26-25 going into the half. Junior Declan Soukup hit a three with three minutes left in the half that would give Assumption the lead going into half.
Junior Terrence Bobb-Jones led the team with 20 points. Bobb-Jones also made 10 of his 15 free throw attempts.
Stonehill College 86 Assumption College 71
Even with four starters with 10 or more points, Stonehill College proved too much for Assumption.
Assumption held a 17-13 lead through the first 10 minutes of the game. After an 11-2 Stonehill run, Assumption lost the lead for good, going down by six and by a score of 24-19.
Stonehill then created a double-digit lead, 34-24, with three minutes left in the first half. Assumption would bring the game to within five with a jump shot from Zenevitch, but Stonehill’s Adam Bramanti pushed their lead to 39-32 with a layup at the buzzer.
Stonehill continued to dominate during the second half. After Bobb-Jones made a layup to bring Assumption to within nine points, 60-51, with 10 minutes left, Stonehill took a sizeable lead with a three, going up by 12 points. Stonehill would then go up by as much as 20 points in the second half. Assumption would cut the deficit to 15 before the 86-71 final.
The Hounds played Merrimack College on Saturday February. 14. They lost 78 -57, continuing a five game losing streak. They are back in action tonight when they travel to Saint Michael’s College.
