Battle of Beauty: Miss Universe
The 63rd Annual Miss Universe Pageant aired on January 25 at 8 p.m. on NBC. 88 women from 88 different countries competed in a series of different events. The event was hosted at Florida State University in Miami. Performers included Nick Jonas, Gavin DeGraw and Prince Royce.
After the swimsuit contest, the competition was narrowed from 15 contestants, to just 10 for the evening gown competition. The final ten competitors included Miss Jamaica, clad in a sleek short-sleeved red gown; Miss Colombia, in a stunning silver gown; Miss Ukraine, in a high-low red gown; Miss Netherlands in a bright yellow gown; Miss Argentina in a see-through, platinum dress; Miss Venezuela in a ruby red mermaid-style gown; Miss U.S.A. in a tight but lovely long red dress; Miss Spain in a studded silver dress; Miss Australia in a tight, flowing royal blue gown with a train; and Miss Philippines in a strapless silver gown. The top five finalists included Miss U.SA., Miss Netherlands, Miss Ukraine, Miss Jamaica and Miss Colombia.
When the competition came to an end, Miss Colombia, Paulina Vega, was crowned Miss Universe, while Miss U.S.A was first runner-up, with Miss Ukraine, Miss Netherlands and Miss Jamaica trailing behind as runners-up. Colombia has not had a Miss Universe win in 56 years.
Interestingly enough, many Twitter followers shared that they thought that Miss Jamaica deserved the Miss Universe win over Miss Colombia. Some cited her confidence as the reason they’d have chosen her over Vega, while others cited her unconventional looks, as she sported a pixie cut while most pageant contestants usually have long, flowing hair.
According to National Public Radio, Miss Jamaica commented on her unconventional beauty, saying, “I don’t have long tresses like everyone else. I’m just representing myself and that’s what beauty pageants are all about — you don’t have to look a certain way...and I feel like I represent that.”
There were other awards presented to the Miss Universe contestants, including Miss Congeniality, Miss Photogenic and the National Costume Award (as voted for via Twitter users). Miss Nigeria took home the Miss Congeniality trophy, while Miss Puerto Rico took home the Miss Photogenic trophy. Miss Indonesia won the finalist in the National Costume Contest.
