Preview: Midnight Madness is going to "highlight your fall semester"
Fall athletes are wrapping up their seasons, and the courts are being cleaned and polished. It’s that time of the year again for the Hounds to kick off their Basketball season.
The Student Government Association is partnering once again with the Department of Athletics and Recreation to create the event that is guaranteed to highlight your fall semester. A highly anticipated event by the entire community, Midnight Madness is an event that officially welcomes the Men and Women’s Basketball teams and offers them encouragement and support as they officially kick off their seasons. The event is a giant pep rally. This year, it will be on Thursday, October 23 at 9:45 p.m. in Laska Gymnasium. It is one of the oldest and most attended events on campus.
This year, seniors Matt Heriveaux and Mary “Bizzie” Gonring, two of Assumption’s most spirited Hounds, will be our hosts for the evening. SGA has re-vamped the event and are taking Midnight Madness to a whole new level this year.
School spirit, camaraderie and hundreds of free, exclusive Midnight Madness t-shirts—what more can you ask for? Along with the 300 free t-shirts that will be tossed into the crowd, we have some new exclusive “Hound Pride” gear that will be given to hundreds of lucky fans. This is gear that is a must for the Hound Pound.
New this year, each class will be assigned a color to wear that night. Seniors are asked to wear blue, juniors black, sophomores grey and first years white. Members of SGA and the Student Athletic Advisory Committee will direct you to your class’ section when you enter Laska. There are incentives to wearing your class’ color, including free Midnight Madness gear.
You also get the chance to compete in the “Pizza Contest,” also known as the contest that blindfolds a select number of spirited Hounds as they partner with one other person and race to put on a basketball uniform. The winners of this contest will instantly walk away with 10 free pizzas. In addition to this contest, we will have a three-point contest, frozen t-shirt contest and the popular dunk contest.
Also new this year, we have hired a professional production company to help us during the event to provide some awesome effects as we welcome in the Hounds. DJ Fabian Rivera will be mixing the music for the players to run out to and get you on your feet moving. You definitely do not want to miss this new feature of Midnight Madness.
Now I’ve mentioned some of our giveaways, but I should also mention that we have secured about $600 worth of gift cards to be given away to contest winners, raffle winners and ultimate fans. Some of the gift cards include The Bookstore, Target, Bagel Inn, Wooberry, Dunkin’ Donuts, Caffe Espresso Trattoria, NERB and Winter Bash Tickets, just to name a few. I’d also like to thank Sodexo for their generous donation, for they are the ones who truly make this event possible.
The Dance Team and the Step Squad are also set to perform. If they do not get you pumped up for the basketball season, I don’t know what will.
This event would not be possible without the support from the Cheerleading Team, Office of Student Activities, Athletics and Recreation and also Coach Abbey Capobianco, by serving as an integral member for the event.
Midnight Madness 2014 is sure to be a hit, and we hope to see you there on Thursday night as we kick off the Hounds Basketball Season. Be sure to use the hashtag #ACMM all night long for the opportunity to win free shirts, gift cards and more. Get pumped for the event that is sure to get you excited for the winter sports season.
